Will Healthbook/Passbook be a New UI Paradigm in iOS 8?

Image

9to5Mac reports this morning on mocked up screenshots of what Healthbook might look like. Healthbook is the new health & fitness tracking app that is said to be in iOS 8. Apple already makes the Passbook app, which has a very similar card interface.

So, is this the future? Will Apple  Continue reading

The Real Reason Microsoft is Porting OneNote to the Mac: An Apple Acquisition

The Verge has reported that Microsoft is planning on releasing OneNote for the Mac. While Evernote is certainly a target, I think there’s more to the story than that.

There are also rumors of iOS 8 containing a note-taking application. How this app differs from the built-in iOS Notes app is not clear, but it may have a lot to do with this acquisition by Apple:  Continue reading

Nokia X Services SDK

Yesterday, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Nokia announced the Nokia X, a line of Android (AOSP)-based smartphones that use Microsoft services instead of Google Play services.

Nokia Developer now has an SDK available for those who want to integrate with those services on Nokia X-compatible apps.

It installs a Nokia X virtual device, so even if you’re not developing for the Nokia X now, you can get a feel for what Android connecting to Microsoft services feels like.

I just tried it out and, oddly, it doesn’t use Bing for search, but rather uses Google. The contacts & calendar apps and “Add Account” in the Settings app, however, do ask for Exchange credentials. (I just did some more research and it looks like this virtual device is just for testing your services–it doesn’t look like the UI on the actual Nokia X phone, and doesn’t include all the bundled apps such as Bing and Outlook.)

Nokia X and Samsung Galaxy S5 debut at Mobile World Congress 2014

Two major new phones debuted in Barcelona at this year’s Mobile World Congress: The Nokia X and the Samsung Galaxy S5. One is more interesting than the other, and you may be surprised which one that is.

First, the Galaxy S5. Much as the iPhone 5S was an update on the iPhone 5, the Galaxy S5 is Continue reading

Are Sapphire Screens the Key to Hardened Mobile Devices for the Enterprise?

Sapphire screens have made a big splash in the rumor mill lately for the next generation of iPhones. All the stories I’ve read tout sapphire’s scratch resistance, shatter-resistance, and even caustic substance resistance as great for consumers–but what about the enterprise?

In the days of yore, Windows CE handhelds were available from some  manufacturers as ‘hardened’ devices to withstand the rigors of factories, and use by field workers and healthcare workers. However, two things conspire against the availability of hardened devices in the age of iOS and Android:  Continue reading

Do Enterprises Want a 13-inch iPad Pro?

A new rumor from Digitimesreported by 9to5Mac, corroborates previous rumors (from The Wall Street Journal and others) of a larger, 13-inch iPad Pro.

While I agree with much of 9to5Mac’s analysis, I don’t agree with their comments about keeping the same form factor as the current iPad, nor do I agree with the rumor’s educational customer emphasis.

What would an enterprise like more than  Continue reading

9 Steps to Enterprise Mobile Self-Actualization, Part 2 of 3

I’m in the middle of creating a 3-part series on the Magenic web site titled “9 Steps to Enterprise Mobile Self-Actualization”.

The first installment talked about development technology. Over time, enterprises mature in the technology they use to address mobility.

The second installment, posted today, talks about audience. Enterprises often start with “We need an app, pronto!” in the consumer space. But this, too, tends to evolve over time, as more uses for mobility become obvious.

iOS is Dead! Long Live iOS!

The meaning of the phrase “The King is Dead! Long Live the King!” may be lost on many Americans, as we don’t have a monarchy. It’s an apparent contradiction, and seems baffling. It has its roots in France, where as soon as the king died, his son or heir would instantly be the new king. So the phrase really means “The Old King is Dead! Long Live the New King!”. It just doesn’t sound as catchy that way.

In a similar manner, it’s clear that Apple is declaring that “iOS is Dead! Long Live iOS!”. Allow me to explain.

iOS 7 on iPhone and iPad

Apple made a huge announcement last night that will have a dramatic effect on any iOS applications your enterprise may have written. Apple stated in no uncertain terms that, Continue reading
